Line Describing a Cone

McCall is well known for his avant-grade films from the early 70s. from 1973, he produced “Line Describing a Cone” which a sculptural form composed of projected light slowly evolves in 3D space. The light beam emitted from the projector, through the black film with circle drawn upon it, shown across a smokey room, appears to be in the shape of a cone with tip at projector’s lens and base at the wall on which the light beam is projected.

McCall uses film to explore ideas of space, architecture and duration – in this instance by conjuring up four walls of intersecting light. The actual work occurs in the space between the film projector and the screen.

 Between You and I

it is a sculptural installation based on two12metre tall standing forms of ’solid’ light, projected downwards from ceiling to floor within a darkened space.

Transparent Projection Screen

January 14, 2007 at 2:04 am (Uncategorized)

I don’t know why we can not random view foreign Webs in
China. For example, I can’t browse my Blog, Wikipedia and BBC. There are so many restricts in my country.

This week, Andy emphasizes the main assignments of our second unit. The most important point is to confirm the orientation of our project, and make sure every detail of final show. During these three months, we may change some aspects of our project. Thus, reporting the reasons and methods of changes are necessary.

As for my project, the choice of a to-be-projected item is very important. Be honest, I really puzzled about this. I still remember last unit, a member of D-Fuse shown some of their works which are using transparent projection screen to produce 3D effects. I think it is an excellent material to display 3-D effect ray of light. But is it easy to install? Is it suit for my project? Moreover, the original idea of my project is to illustrate the interrelationship of light and object (light make itself visible through object, and object make it self visible through light either). If I use this screen, I am afraid it can only reflect light, and is it means that it only is an imitational tool?

Any way, show some information about Transparent Projection Screen:

Transparent Screens are a stiff plastic film or a 1/8 to 1/4 solid sheet of plastic, depending on the design and optical characteristics desired. It is almost water clear with unique optical characteristics. The custom ones such as the “Talking Head” type are water clear around the head area where there is no coating.

The image can be live or pre-recorded video. It will also work with still images from a slide projector.

One of the special effects is multiple images. If 2 Transparent Screens are lined up 4 feet away from one another, the same image appears on all of them. The Screen has a unique affect of not scattering the light that passes through it. This could be used as “Big Brother” effect, of one person everywhere.
